COMMENTS: Crafted of bright yellow and white 18k gold, this gemstone ring features a .38 carat oval cut electric green tourmaline securely set in a classic basket setting. The stone is truly eye-catching with its stimulating color which boldly stands out against the setting. The setting has 2 rhombus shapes, one on either side of the tourmaline, which are pave set with 4 diamonds each. The diamonds are set in a white gold background so they sparkle and shine against the yellow gold. The name “Paraiba” perks up the ears of people who like tourmaline. In 1989 and 1990, spectacular bright blue to bright green elbaite tourmaline, colored by trace amounts of copper, was found in pegmatite pockets at mines in the states of Paraiba and Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The color of these gems was remarkable. Many people began to describe them with adjectives such as “electric” and “neon” because the colors were so saturated and vivid. The material was informally called “Paraiba” after the locality. The beautiful gems were soon selling for over $2000 per carat, and news about them spread throughout gemstone markets. People loved the gems, their colors, and their exotic name. Prices for faceted gems of the highest quality material in sizes over one carat escalated to over $10,000 per carat. “Paraiba” quickly became the most popular and most valuable tourmaline. Gems of similar appearance were found in Nigeria in 2001, and some people immediately applied the name to them – again in the hope that it would boost their value. More were discovered in Mozambique in 2005. This neon green tourmaline was mined in Mozambique so the name “Paraiba” is being used to describe the electric color of the gem, not the location of which it was mined. Because this stone was not mined in the Paraiba states of Brazil, we are not selling this stone as a Paraiba tourmaline, rather an electric green tourmaline with a similar color to the famous Paraiba Tourmalines from Brazil. Circa 2000’s. Pictured as received from a local estate. Excellent estate condition with minimal wear indicative of age.
