- Gold double eagles made their debut in 1850 however, 1849 was when the original proof was proposed. The first design of the double eagle was the liberty head style which had three different varieties. After the liberty head design came the Saint-Gaudens (including the 1928 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle) often considered to be the most beautiful US coin. Early issued of the Saint-Gaudens were issued in high relief with incredibly low mintage. After 1907 all the Saint-Gaudens were made in standard relief. One interesting difference from all the other coins the mint had produced was the proof varieties of the Saint-Gaudens. The proof coins were made in a matte nearly sand-blasted finish instead of the mirror-like glossy finish all other coins were given.
