1905 $2.5 Gold Quarter Eagle Liberty Head Philadelphia Mint:
Quarter Eagles originally first came about by the Act of April2, 1792. Each eagle was to weigh 67.5 grains of .9167 of fine gold. At a later date the weights were alters to be 64.5 grains of .8992 fine gold by the Ace of June 28, 1834. Dates prior to this Act of June 28, 1834 are incredibly scarce & considered rarities amongst gold collectors.
The first ever gold quarter eagles were the Capped Bust variety, these were issued from 1796 to 1807 before having design revisions. In 1808 the bust switched the direction it was facing from right to left. 1808 specifically is a one year type and incredibly scarce in all conditions.
Next, in 1829 the mint decided to shrink the overall size of the coin as well as some of the details in the design. In 1834 this coin was issued with the motto & is an incredibly scarce type issue.
The next design was released in 1834 called the Classic Head. This design changed the bust to have braided hair with a headband.
Finally, the Liberty Head $2.5 Gold Quarter Eagle was the last design of the series; first issued in 1840 and 1907 was the final issue.
