The first type to be issued was the Liberty Head dollar which are smaller in diameter and thicker. A later coin design was proposed making the diameter larger and thinner. This brought about the type 2 gold liberty dollar and the princess head gold dollars. The princess head gold dollar were the last of the gold dollar issues with the exception of commemorative dollars.
