COMMENTS: It is incredibly rare to find a piece in excellent detail, as is this, from 300-1550 AD. The necklace features handcrafted 22k gold tubular and round beads with meticulous detail. The pendant hanging from the chain depicts a carved frog made of quartz and a red stone securely bezel set. Long before the arrival of the Europeans and others, Native people of Latin America had mastered many metallurgical techniques, including mining, hammering, and casting gold to produce jewelry, ornaments, masks, and other items. In ancient Latin America, gold symbolized power and spiritual wealth but was never used for money. Human figures of this type were carried by shamans and are thought to represent the spirits that empowered and assisted them. Being primarily water creatures, frogs are also held in high regard. Aside from the traditional symbol of cleansing and healing, frogs are sometimes held in Celtic cultures as monarchs. In the Chinese tradition, the frog is a female spirit (yin). It is thought to bring good luck and abundance. Pictured as received from a local estate. Excellent estate condition with minimal wear indicative of age.
